Ginie Somaya Reece (born June 17, 1983) is an American rapper, glamour model and television personality of Salvadorian descent. Somaya was born and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, California, and moved to New York City to pursue her musical career and star on the hit reality show Love & Hip Hop, which is being aired on VH1.[1]
Biography
Early life
Somaya Reece was born on June 17, 1983, of two immigrants from El Salvador. Her family settled in South Central, Los Angeles, where she was born and raised with five other siblings. She dropped out of school at age 11, and became involved in local gangs. She resolved to get out of the gangs and went on to receive her GED. She then attended UCLA, where she took theatre classes. During this time, while working at a local hotel as a housecleaning maid she was discovered by a William Morris talent agent. [2]
2003-2010: MySpace and career beginnings
Somaya became viral on the social networking site, MySpace. She obtained over 31 million views and more than 965,000 friends. In 2008, Somaya was nominated “Internet Hottie” by Spike TV "Guys Choice Awards".[3] In 2009, she was named the #1 Latina artist on popular networking site, MySpace. She went on to release her debut single "Mira Mi Pum Pum", the single went on to independently achieved over 3.3 million spins in just ten and a half weeks. Her second single, “Girls Night” produced by The Pharmacy reached over 1 million spins in less than 10 weeks. In 2009, her music successfully began the cross over into the UK. In Sept of 2009, Somaya’s single “Ooh Baby Baby” was played on rotation at Liberty Radio and Europe’s top radio station Choice FM. [4] In February of 2010, Somaya's in demand viral presence caught the eye of several major record labels, leading to offers of a recording contract. After several months of negotiating, Somaya Reece signed a full distribution record deal with INgrooves and Universal Records as their partner. Somaya went on to release her single “Tramp” off her currently untitled debut album, which was formerly titled "Miss Opinionated”. The song released virally as a “listening” record on “The TMZ of Hip Hop” www.VladTV.com Becoming the most controversial, highest viewed/commented record within a 48 hour period 450,000 plays to date. "Tramp" was then released on iTunes on February 23, 2010. Within the first 4 hours of release, the single made headlines again. iTunes placed "Tramp" on their front page news under “News and Noteworthy” next to today’s popular recording artists. The song was also hugely successful in the United Kingdom, it went on to chart at #1 spot on the UK's Electronica Chart.
2011-present: Love & Hip Hop and La Jefa Tequila
In early 2011, she moved to New York City. Almost immediately she was called into the MTV Networks offices. After several meetings with the Senior VP, Jim Ackerman & Mona Scott Young at the VH1 television network, Somaya sealed a reality television show with VH1 as their star lead artist of Love & Hip Hop. The show follows her and other female artists as they try to make it in music industry, such as singer Olivia. The show became an instant hit, with record breaking viewers for the network. The show has currently spawned two highly successful seasons.[5] In April of 2011, she released a single titled "Would You Still Love Me" featuring rapper XO. Shortly after, she was named the "Hottest Latina In Music" by Maxim En Español.[6] Later that year, her single "Dale Mami" featuring rapper Lumidee was released. The music video for "Dale Mami" premiered on the Mun2 show "Urban Tip" on January 11, 2012. In 2011, Somaya scored the soundtrack for the Lionsgate film, Go For It, featuring the song "Ooh Baby Baby". The second season of Love & Hip Hop premiered on November 14, 2011. During the season, Somaya heavily promoted her single "Fuego", the song was given a television placement. In late 2011, Somaya collaborated with upcoming Latin artist, Louis James, on his debut single "Eh Mama". The song was produced by Grammy Award winning producer Richy Peña, with the music video being shot in the Dominican Republic and debuting in the winter of 2011 on Youtube[7], with the song premiering on iTunes on January 2, 2012.[8] The song gathered much media attention in the Dominican Republic, gaining positive reviews. After the finale of the second season of Love & Hip-Hop, Somaya released a music video for "Classy Girl" to promote her mixtapes, Rebel with a Cause. In February of 2011, Somaya was a host and guest commentator for VH1's "100 Greatest Woman in Music" to celebrate the most inspirational female artists of the past few decades. In 2012, La Jefa Tequila will be available in the United States, Latin America, China, Australia, and the United Kingdon, this makes Somaya the first female of El Salvadorian descent to own a tequila company.[9]
Breast Reduction
Early March 2012, she decided to have breast reduction surgery. She bloged extensively about it on her personal website calling the reduction Projectboobs. The plan was to have a reduction from a DD-cup to a D-cup. It is unclear what exactly her final measurements will be. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]
